If you are bored and have nothing to do, you can try this neat free service from Omegle.com, talking with strangers! You don’t need to register, just open the page Omegle.com and click the “Start chat” button. In no time, you will be connected to a stranger and you can start chatting. The interesting part is that the person on the end want to chat too, just like you. If the topic was right, the conversation will be very interactive. The most important part is, your chats are completely anonymous. But sometimes, the conversation can get ugly as some strangers like to harass others like using dirty word, talking about racism, and so on. As the conversation is completely anonymous, they have nothing to scare of. If this ever occurs to you, just disconnect by clicking the disconnect button at the bottom.

If you find your conversation interesting, you can save the whole of it after disconnecting. It will be saved as HTML files with same formatting as Omegle interface.

For iPhone and iPod Touch users, you can get the Omegle iPhone app for just $0.99, which enables you to chat with random strangers anywhere as long as you have internet connection.

So, have fun talking to strangers!

I am surfing on a 14″ wide screen laptop and somehow I find out that the I dont have enough space. The browser (Firefox) is cramped with tabs, Menu Bar, Google Bar, and Navigation Bar. A great idea is to make all of these a little bit smaller and pack them on just a bar. The trick is actually quite simple. First, you need to right click anywhere on the navigation bar (not on the button though), then select “Customize…”.

On the customize window, select the option “view small icons”, which can be found at left bottom of the window. After that, drag the navigation buttons and put them beside the menu bar, then followed by the address bar and search field. Apply the change and return back to Firefox. You will see that there is still an empty bar below the menu bar. To get rid of this, go to View – Toolbars, and untick the Navigation Toolbars.

It is very simple and no plugin required. What make me feel bad about this is, I have found this feature after years of using Firefox. Ok, below is the snapshot of my Firefox.

Have a great weekend!

Hello guys. This is my new post after about five months. Oh my God! It seems that I write a post in five months. What a rate! Honestly speaking, I don’t know where my blogging’s passions have gone. Maybe it is because stress in study or maybe not. Ok, whatever it is, now I am back. Hopefully, I can improve my rate of writing. Maybe once in a month. Just kidding.

Like the title said, I am back with Linux. No, I am not boycotting Windows or Microsoft! Microsoft are such a great company, who gives us (most of home computer users) such a great and user-friendly operation systems (hey, it even comes with great IE7! Who needs Firefox?) and they new version looks very great to my eyes. Unfortunately, my old printer does not want to work on Windows Vista. Canon just refused to come up with updated Vista driver for this printer. Yes, I know, it is an old printer, so what? Customers are king, right? Or nowadays not anymore? By the way, it was also my fault of buying an old used printer (Canon MPC190), just to spare some money from buying the ink. I muss keep up with technologies or just borrow my friends’ printers.

Ok, back to Linux. Now I am running openSUSE 10.3 on Compaq Presario V3000. The biggest issue was the wireless network card. Before this, I gave up installing Ubuntu because of the same issue. It is difficult to find solution for your troubles with Linux, if you couldn’t get to internet. I needed to switch to Windows XP to get access to internet looking for solution for this wireless issue. I need to save the whole webpage and restarted the system and opened it back on Linux. Not all the solutions work for me. That means, I need to switch from Linux to Windows quiet a number of times.

This guide from Jabba Rants did work great for me. I still will paste the steps below because many of links pointing to the solution don’t work. The sites are not exist anymore. Sorry Jabba, I don’t intend to steal your content.

Installation Guide

Insert CD and boot.

When you see the menu to choose which installation type you want to do, choose the regular installation, but before pressing Enter, type: “noapic irqpoll nosmp” without the quotes. Those three words should be at the bottom of the GRUB menu in the Options line. Hit Enter.

Go through the graphical installer. It is pretty straight forward and self-explanatory. Go ahead and accept most defaults as they are. I would recommend setting up networking and everything and getting updates with a regular ethernet wired connection during the install process.

Once it is finished, go to YaST (Administrator Settings). Go to System and click on “Boot Loader”. Click the first item and click “Edit”. Make sure that you see “noapic irqpoll nosmp” in the Options line. If they are not there, add them.

While still in YaST, click on Sofware and then choose “Community Repositories”. Make sure that the main repositories as well as the nVidia and any other ones you think you might want are checked and click Finish. After they are done being set up, click on “Software Repositories” in YaST and make sure that all the repositories you selected are enabled and make sure that the “openSUSE-10.3-OSS-KDE 10.3″, which is the CD or DVD, is disabled.

Click on “Software Management” in YaST, and search for “nvidia” and choose “nvidia-gfxG01-kmp-default” and “x11-video-nvidiaG01″ to install. Then search for “ndiswrapper” and choose it to install. Click “Accept” and let it finish the installation.

Google for “Dell R151517.EXE” and download that file from Dell’s download site. Open a terminal and navigate to the directory where the file was downloaded. Type: “unzip R151517.EXE”. This will probably spill files all over the place, so you might want to move that file into a directory that you can easily delete later. Once it is done unzipping, type in the following series of commands:

su -

    (enter your root password)

cd /home/user/directory/where/you/unzipped/the/file/

cd DRIVER/

ndiswrapper -i bcmwl5.inf

ndiswrapper -m

echo blacklist bcm43xx >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

echo ndiswrapper >> /etc/modules

reboot

Now, if everything went smoothly, when your computer boots back up, you should see the nVidia logo flash across the screen right before you log in. Once you are logged in, you should be able to click on the KNetworkManager icon in the system tray and see your wireless networks. If you didn’t see the nVidia logo before you logged in, edit the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf as root and find the word ‘nv’ and change it to ‘nvidia’ and restart the X Server or reboot again. Hopefully someone will be helped by this guide and not have to go through the many hours of trial and error to get this notebook working nicely with Linux.

I didn’t use the Dell R151517.EXE file. The contents of the files are just the same like my Broadcom wireless network card driver for my laptop SP36684A.exe. Wireless and Graphic card issues are now settled. Now I am having problem with my sound card.

Ok, till then. Sayonara!

Somehow I could not set up Firefox as fully standard browser. At first start up of Firefox, I was reminded that Firefox was not a standard browser and asked to make Firefox as standard web browser. I did tick the selection and Firefox icon appeared on the very above of the start menu.

But, when I clicked links from Yahoo! Messenger or Acrobat Reader, the links were opened with Internet Explorer. I do not hate Internet Explorer, but I just want to use one browser and the links should be opened in one window, so that the taskbar is not too crowded.

I thought it was a method from Microsoft so that people will tend to use Internet Explorer, but I was mistaken. The setting of the standard programs can be change. To make your Firefox as fully standard browser for your Windows Vista, just follow these simple steps:

Start button > Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs > Set program access and computer defaults

and this window will appear:

Untick the option “Enable access to this program” and then click OK. After that, the links you click from other program such as Yahoo Instant Messenger or Adobe Reader will be opened via Firefox. But, the links from Windows Live Messenger are still opened in IE7.

Current internet browsers such as IE7 and Mozilla Firefox allow users to surf the web using tabs function. This makes the surfing neat and easy as you can browse many webpages just in one windows. The new Firefox allows users to restore their latest session if Firefox is not closed properly such as during blackout or your computer stopping from responding. And this feature really helps me a lot.

But, what can I do, if I want to intentionally save the current session and want to restore it when I open the Firefox again? A little trick that I have found is by killing the Firefox process. You can do this by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL to open the task manager and kill the process with image name firefox.exe.

It works great but this is not practical. There must be an easier way. Then, I searched in Mozilla addons page and I’ve found this plugin for Firefox, Save Session. By using this plugin, you can save your session by just clicking on the menu “save session and exit” under the File Menu. On the next start of Firefox, you will not be asked whether you want to restore the session or not, instead the session will be restored automatically.

To download this plugin, you can go to this page. -Save session-. By the way, it is compatible to Firefox version 2.0 – 3.0a4.

If you already have Hotmail account, you can switch to this new version by clicking the button “Join Windows Live Hotmail” after you have logged into your account. But, as I went to www.hotmail.com (German version), I could see that they only offer 1GB space. After clicking the button to register a new user, then you will see the 2GB spaces offered.

Some new functions offered by Windows Live Hotmail are:

Double space with 2GB (before only 1GB)
Hotmail is quiet slow in free email service competition. GMail is now offering to 3GB and Yahoo!Mail is planning to give unlimited storage.

Colorcodes for doubtful and suspicious emails.

The ability to be accessed via internet reada cellphones or PDAs using the address http://mobile.live.com

“Safety Bar” function. This will show you the potential of the mail to be dangerous to you. White for know email address, yellow for unknown sender, and red for mails with potentially dangerous contain.

The Outlook design. Besides, you can also use right click for some context menus such as making a new folder, which is not offered in GMail. You can also move you emails using Drag and Drop.

Integrated chat with Windows Live Messenger. You can chat direct on the email interface. Just like GMail and GTalk.

I’ve already regsiter my new hotmail and ready to test it. Why don’t you get one now? It’s free by the way.

With this pack, your Windows XP will be transformed into Windows Vista look. This transformation pack is well designed, but I have problem with the circle start button. The added image to make the button round seems not to be at the right place. Maybe I am using a widescreen monitor. Besides, in explorer window, you will never see “up one level” button in the toolbar. This is what Vista looks like. But in Windows Vista, you can click on the address bar to go back to the level before the folder you are viewing. As I always use this button, this transformation pack is not for me.

Vista Inspirat (BricoPack)

This is another free transformation pack for Windows XP, which will not require other additional program to skin the Windows such as WindowsBlind or StyleXP. But, sorry to say that the installation is irreversible. I did try System restore but it did not help much. I just need to format my computer. sigh. By the way, the look is not a copy of Vista.

FlyakiteOSX

If you like Mac OS, but you are using Windows XP, you can change the interface to MacOSX using this transformation pack. The publisher gives you a guarantee that this installation is completely reversible without hassle. I am using this in my computer and I like it. If you want to aquafy your Windows XP look, I recommend this instead of Vista Transformation pack.

After having vacation with my friends, I want to share the photos that I have taken with them. But the problem is, the size of the photos is too big to be attached on email and it will took ages for the photos to be uploaded. I have problem with Gmail when I try to attach file bigger than 5MB. Maybe my internet connection also contributes to the problem.

Then, I thought of sharing the files via free files hosting service like Rapidshare and Megaupload. After compressing the photo files, they took more than 1GB of space. Rapidshare only allows 100MB for each file and 500MB for Megaupload. Hmm, this is not a good idea exactly.

Then I thought of allowing my friends accessing my computer using FTP. If you are using Windows XP Professional, it is easy for you because you don’t need third-party software. The complete guide can be found here – Beginners Guides: Setting up an FTP Server in WinXP. Since I am using Windows XP Home Edition, I do not favour this solution. The tutorial does cover the part of using the third-party software using Serv-U software. But I had difficulties in installing the software. Besides, some of my friends are using internet from their university’s network which blocks port 21.

And the solution that I taken is to let them access my computer using Internet browser. I share the files using HTTP sharing, which is not too difficult by using a simple software, HFS (HTTP File Server). With great support from this website, even if you know nothing about setting up a server, you still can have your own HTS running. I must say that sharing is made easy with this software. By the way, it is free too.

Have you ever use public computer, which is not installed with instant messenger softwares, such as Yahoo Messenger and AIM? Probably it is the computer in the library or school computer room. And the worst part is, you cannot install the software because you don’t have enough permission to do that.

If you have such problem, maybe you can give meebo a try. With meebo, you can connect and use your instant messenger just using internet browser, such as Firefox and Internet Explorer.

With meebo, you can adapt quickly with the interface since the interface is designed to look like the messenger software. You can freely drag the friend list window and the chat window.

But, there is a minus point of this service, that I have discovered. The version used by meebo does not support many features like the real messenger software. My friend used meebo to log-in to his Yahoo Messenger account, since he had problem with the software. As a result, I could not send files, load IMviroments and share photos with him.

By the way, it is a acceptable solution for the public computer without messenger software installed.
