The spam comments can still go through
Recently, I had problem with spam comments. I use Askimet for spam protection, but lots of spam comment still queued in my moderation list. Therefore, I decided to install another plugin, so that I can block the spam comments.
I installed the plugin, Did You Pass Math by Steven Herod. The plugin restricts spam comments by asking the commenter a simple arithmetic question, e.g. 8+4=?. This is intended to differentiate the human being and robot. I hope that it will not vanish your lust to comment on something.
By the way, the plugin works well and there is no more spam comment on my moderation list. But, there are still spam comments, which can bypass the restriction of mathematic question. Luckily, they will be caught by Askimet. I am wondering how can the robot still spam my blog. Did the robot knows to answer the mathematic question? Maybe I should put questions about General Knowledge. Or maybe I should add one more plugin to fight spam, spam karma, etc.
How do you fight spammers? Maybe you have some useful tricks. Why don’t you share with us?

Erm..recently, there one project based on akismet that used Ruby on Rails at http://rubyforge.org/projects/ror-akismet/
I make life easier for everyone.. I use Spam Karma 2. hehe
Is it possible to use the combination of spam karma, askimet, and Did you pass math? Spam is very annoying.
Spam Karma 2 is a combination of several different filters. It uses Akismet and the rechecks it with several other filters before passing up the comments. It’s good.
yes, you should use SPAM karma 2.
The problem with “Did u pass math” is sometimes it get insane, i mean after visitors write the comment (esp long) and fill in the correct number, it will appear “did you pass your math?”
-p.s: sometimes-
its anoying when that person write long comment. Do you think he wants to write it back? Me? Sure Not!
I had activated three plug-ins (SK2, Askimet, and Did u pass math) but still spam comments queue in my moderation list.
And after reading the comment of RajaBlog, I disabled the Did u pass math plug-in.
The best way to kill spam is to allow only registered users to comment. But, it is not reader-friendly.
I’m glad you eliminated the unnecessary math test. Hate those. And please, stopping spam by requiring registration to comment is just letting comment spammers win. Don’t do that!
You and your readers deserve more than letting these Internet terrorists win.
Thanks for bringing the issue up and helping people understand that making readers jump through hoops to comment only stops the conversation.
I agree with you Lorelle. Let the spammers win is a very bad idea. The best way to get more comments is making the readers easy to comment. No need to add two numbers or tick on a check box before they can comment.
[...] Recently, I have written about the spam comments, which still queued in my moderation list. Maybe some of you out there still dont have any idea what is spam exactly. I have stumbled upon an interesting thread in Webmaster Malaysia forum discussing about the meaning of spam in easy words. And this description catch my attention: SPAM = Stupid Pointless Annoying Message! [...]
